It’s my birthday today, and it’s one of those things I increasingly greet with mixed feelings. Not so much because I’m upset about getting older – I actually am glad to be getting older, to be finding my footing and my style, as well as becoming more confident.
It’s more about the bittersweetness of it, that while I gain a lot as time passes, I’m also a losing a lot, or so it feels. The double-edged sword of stability is that while life is more peaceful, I often find myself wondering if I’ll be able to do all the things I want to do.
This restlessness, busy-ness and the contradictory desire for simplicity is so typical of me. Is anyone else out there a believer in your zodiac sign? I don’t so much subscribe to belief in daily horoscopes, but I think my zodiac sign has had a definite impact on my personality. I’m a Leo, and the moon was in Virgo when I was born…that means I am dramatic (!), creative, ambitious, socially conscious, a bit of a spendthrift, overly sensitive and…you guessed it – I desire stability. I believe in the truth of zodiac personality traits so much that when I met Matt, one of the first things I did was Google “Libra man personality” (LOL, don’t tell him.)
In honor of my birthday, today I’m wearing some zodiac inspired jewelry. This zodiac birthstone necklace was a sweet birthday gift from the amazing team over at Charmed by a Cause, and my moon phases necklace was a gift from my friend Renée of Goblin Shark.
Charmed by a Cause jewelry is ethically made in New York City, and designed and produced using sustainable materials. Their metals are 100% recycled 14 karat gold and sterling silver, and all their stones are ethically-sourced and their diamonds are lab grown or reclaimed. They also donate a portion of their proceeds to some wonderful charitable causes. Some of the other pieces I love by them include this Goddess necklace and this gorgeous hammered ring. But I am excited that I finally own a piece of birthstone jewelry! It took me until 28, but I have one now!
While I was writing this post about my birthday accessories, I did a bit more digging into my birth chart, which I’m not sure if you guys find all that interesting, but I did! I had never looked at my birth chart, but basically you can use this website to plug in where and when you were born and it tells you all about your sun, moon and ascendant signs and what it means for your personality. Here are some summaries from mine…which I am not surprised about at all.
Leo Sun: She is masterful, likes authority, aspires towards an ideal. She likes to give advice. She is honest, frank, loyal, open and sincere. Weaknesses: pride, vanity, arrogance.
Virgo Moon: Lunar Virgos find security in the little things in life. They feel most content when they’ve straightened out all the details of everyday life. Tendency to be intensely self-critical and easily stressed.
Cancer Ascendant: She looks for structure and security in relationships. Tendency to spend more than what is earned. Financial progress is slow but steady. Generous with loved ones.
Okay, so, bringing it back down to earth for a bit…(have I lost any of you?)… it really is weird to think about how many things I’ve done over the last year. I started this blog last August. I got married. Traveled to Italy, Greece, Belgium, France and Spain. Bought a house. Finished my master’s degree.
With all these changes, I’ve been thinking a lot about what I’d like to do at 28. I want to use my highly contradictory, Leo-Sun-Virgo-Moon-Cancer-Ascendant personality to my advantage 🙂
Things to do during 28 (a thorough but not comprehensive list):
-Travel more. I have done a lot of “big” trips for a variety of reasons over the past few years, but this year I’d like to do some long weekend trips and get to more destinations. I’d like to see more of the U.S., and Matt and I would like to travel a bit with friends, rather than always going it alone.
-Get more serious about this blog. Not that I’m not serious now, but I want to be a bit more organized in planning my editorial calendar and in the partnerships I take on.
-Make time to cook more from scratch (maybe once a week? That seems realistic) and try to take time to read for at least 15 minutes every day. These things are good for my soul.
-Spend more time cultivating the positive relationships in my life, and let go of ones that are causing stress. I’d like to focus my time on my family and close friends, rather than keeping up with tons of acquaintances and subsequently getting stressed out.
-Be better at saying no to things I don’t have the time or the passion to commit myself to.
-Learn how to properly sew a button. I mean honestly, this is an important life skill.
-Create a revised budget and stick to it (this is likely my most ambitious goal…which you probably gathered from the above.)
Sometimes I don’t really know how to end my blog posts…especially rambling birthday posts full of feelings and goals and astrology. So I’ll leave you with this:
“The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.”
What do you think about astrology? If you look up your birth chart, let me know what you think!
