That blog title was too good to pass up.
Over the last few months, I’ve been getting to know the team over at Boody Eco Wear and their awesome bamboo essentials, and am so excited to be sharing a post in collaboration with them! For 20% off with Boody, use code “HEARTED20” !
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I think basics are the best way to go if you can invest in only a few ethically and sustainably made items. This is for a couple of reasons.
Bras, underwear, tees and leggings are literally the foundation of your wardrobe. I read once that the reason people often struggle to get dressed is because our wardrobes are, often, 80% trend items and 20% basics, when it should really be the other way around. The reason it seems like none of your clothes go together may be because they really…don’t go together. Proper basics are essential to making your wardrobe more functional. There is nothing worse than wanting to wear a particular sweater, or blazer, or pair of pants, and not having the right piece of clothing to suit it – whether that’s a t-shirt that provides enough of a base layer without feeling bulky, or a bodysuit that’s perfect for high-waisted jeans.
While lots of sustainable fashion is amazing, it also isn’t immune to trends. For example, wide leg pants routinely go in and out of style. Basics are simply a better investment – especially if you’re just starting to add more sustainable clothing items to your wardrobe. They’re also more approachable and affordable than a lot of other sustainably-made clothing.
For me personally, I just love basics. I think some people might think shopping for a black t-shirt is boring, but I love neutral, minimal clothing and so, there really is nothing more satisfying than finding that perfect t-shirt.
About Boody
Boody makes timeless, everyday essentials out of bamboo viscose. Bamboo viscose is breathable, comfortable and has a beautiful drape. Boody focuses on basics because they believe that beauty lies in simplicity, and so they intentionally keep their collection minimalist and versatile.
Whenever I work with or buy from a sustainable brand, it’s important to me that I understand the extent of their commitment to people and environment. Boody has a host of ethical and environmental certifications – some of the most I have ever seen in researching a brand.
- Ecocert: Ecocert is an inspection and certification body that offers guarantee of traceability and transparency. The raw bamboo used to make Boody’s bamboo viscose is certified organically grown by Ecocert.
- OEKO-TEX: Boody products have successfully passed tests for harmful substances and contain no dangerous substances such as AZO dyestuffs, phthalates, formaldehyde, and extractable heavy metals. For those with sensitive skin and skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and contact dermatitis, Boody garments carry the “Confidence in Textile” label. (I love this because I have eczema!)
- FSC: All bamboo for Boody products comes from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified forests, which means their harvesting of bamboo does not contribute to natural habitat loss or destruction. FSC is the best forest certification system, and is not to be confused with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, which is a greenwashed program from the timber industry (Source: The Story of Stuff, 2010).
- PETA-Approved Vegan: Buying vegan products whenever possible is important to me, so I wanted to be sure to point this one out.
Plus, a lot of other certifications!
Bamboo viscose is marketed as an eco-friendly material, but it can be chemically-intensive to produce. So it is important to understand the certifications and the steps taken to reduce the impact of making bamboo viscose clothing, which Boody makes clear.
So, speaking of bamboo…
While bamboo viscose has the potential to be made in ways that are not eco-friendly, using bamboo is largely a good thing. Producing commercial harvests of bamboo requires only rainwater, and all water used in the production process is recycled and reused. Bamboo plantations produce 30% more oxygen than an equivalent area of trees and absorb more carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases.
Additionally, and as you probably know, bamboo grows extremely fast and is regenerating.
But on a more personal note, bamboo viscose is breathable, absorbent and silky-soft which does make it ideal for those basics and undergarments.
It’s also great for your workout routine!
This bra has proven to be perfect for low-impact workouts (I do yoga and barre) or for hanging out at home. My tip though – you might want to consider sizing up or down from your recommended size based on your cup size. I ordered what I thought would be true to size, and usually is, in these sorts of bras where you order solely based upon your band size. Could have maybe used a little more room in the cup as the padded inserts are not as large as some other similar brands.
This t-shirt is just as soft as Boody claimed it would be. I love that is has a slight sheen and feels a little fancier than say, a typical cotton t-shirt. It has a lovely drape, and is a tee you can actually wear to the office! It also has a flattering cut and fits true to size.
I want to also note that Boody has a give back program with Goodbye Malaria, an organization that provides jobs and income for women in need and helps fund the life-saving fight against malaria in South Africa. Boody offers Goodbye Malaria Give Back bracelets that donate money to this wonderful cause. (Boody’s CEO is from South Africa!)
